The Spanish DepartmentÌýtookÌýElementary and Intermediate Spanish students on a field trip to a Hispanic restaurant to fulfillÌýBRTC\’s mission of attempting to “educate today’s diverse students for tomorrow’s changing world.â€
There, they wereÌýable to use their newly acquired language skills to order in Spanish and sample food characteristic of some Spanish-speaking countries.Ìý The goal was that the students would order their meals and have some conversation with the waitresses/waiters and each other in Spanish.
Overall, thirteen students were able to participate from the Pocahontas and Paragould BRTC campuses. ÌýÌýThe students were given a handout of possible words and phrases in order to review some of the vocabulary that had been studied, then were asked to order their meal in Spanish. Their speech was evaluated, and afterward they were given individual feedback on what was said.Ìý To conclude the meal, sopapillas (cinnamon-sugar covered fried tortillas) were ordered and they had a small “fiesta†to celebrate the end of the semester. ÌýAll students seemed to enjoy this activity, and many voiced their appreciation BRTCÌýFoundation for funding the event through SEAS.
